Ministry of Defence

Case Study: Colchester Garrison
The contract for the garrison buildings in Colchester is the largest infrastructure Private Finance Initiative in Europe, and at a total value of £72bn over the next 35 years it is one of the largest ongoing construction projects in the UK.
M & S Ltd have been working on the project for several different contractors employed by Sir Rober McAlpine to construct various buildings on the site.
These projects have involved en-suite single living accomodation, training and outdoor recreation facilities, the regional court martial centre, and education and welfare facilities.
The works we carried out within these buildings included external timber cladding, supply and installation of the hardwood timber doorsets and associated mouldings, ironmungery, bespoke joinery and WC cubicle fit-outs.

M & S recognise the very specific logistical problems involved in work on MOD bases. As a result, we have adapted our project management to accomodate the strict security procedures required by today's armed forces. our systems are geared to cope with even the most stringent regulations affecting access to the site for our operatives and delivery of materials.
M & S are and have been involved in a number of major projects for the Ministry of Defence. The largest is, of course, the Colchester Garrison development, but we have also worked on Project SLAM, a scheme designed to bring all accomodation for army personnel into the 21st century.
We have completed a significant amount of work on many of the UK's other air bases, most notably at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk and RAF Halton in Aylesbury, where we carried out large joinery packages to existing and new build dormitory blocks. We have also carried out works on many of the other ancillary buildings commonly associated with MOD establishments.
